One-sixth of KUVO's operating budget came from federal funding. Public broadcast¬ing entities referred to tile 1995 Republican "Contract with America" as the "Contract on America" as the Republican congress pushed to eliminate federal funding for pub¬lic broadcasting. Despite an amendment by Representative Dan Miller of Florida to sustain funding unlit 1998, public radio and public television were increasingly forced to be self-sustaining. KUVO was one of the few all-jazz, stations not supported by an academic institution. Because of KUVO's small size and lack of academic sponsor¬ship, it was particularly vulnerable to cuts in funds. Industry analysis believed that "without state assistance, the diversity and depth of public radio will be staring down the long, cold barrel of commercial compromise.
