In its research into the sanitation of mothers and children, The Thai Ministry of Public Health has identified a
number of problems in children aged 0-5 years old. These include iodine deficiency and anemia in pregnant
mothers, high pregnancy rates for women under twenty years of age, oxygen deficiency in newborns,
underweight newborns, HIV transmission from mother to child, nursing for less than six months and many cases
of tooth decay. There is thus a need to standardize health care and improve the quality of care in these areas
(Ministry of Public Health, 2011).
