Although some studies have shown that moderate alcohol use can be associated
with elevated high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol levels (Miller et ah,
1988), alcohol use clusters with smoking and hostile behaviors and may be
implicated in hypertension and increased risk of coronary heart disease and
stroke (Johnson, Hunter, Amos, Elder, & Berenson, 1989; LaPorte et ah,
1981; Joint National Committee, 1988).
