In order to alleviate road congestion of Kangnam-gu, a CBD area in Seoul, as an
aspect of transportation demand management, it is suggested to introduce a new transit
system connecting the existing transit system composed of subway and bus. This study
forecasted the imaginary demand of possible new transit using the traditional four step
transportation demand forecast method and stated preference survey. According to the study,
the demand for the new transit was turned out sufficient to run profitably. For
implementation, the comparison study is performed among monorail, magnetic levitation,
downtown people mover, and personal rapid transit, focused on their economic aspect and
financial sustainability. The analysis results in that monorail has a total competitiveness to
the other modes considering construction and operation cost, and financial stability.
