It is not unusual for children to like animals, but Alan Rabinowitz had a special reasonfor this. When he was a child, he couldn't talk very well, and he did not like speaking. It was easier for him to communicate with animals than with people, and he spent a lot of time with animals. When he was older he was still interested in animals, and he studied them at university. Then in 1979 he got a job in Belize, in Central America. His job was to study jaguars.
Rabinowitz's plan was to catch jaguars and put radios on them. Then he could learn about how they lived and what dangers there were for jaguars in Beliza. He was the first person to study jaguars like this. He spent three years in Belize doing this; during this he was in a plane crash, and a wild animal killed one of his workers, but he still wentnon working.
After five years, in 1984, Rabinowitz knew a lot about jaguars. He talked to the government of Belize, and they agreed to make a park, called Cockscomb Wildlife Sanctuary, where the animals would be safe. Now, Cockscomeb is the biggest forest that is safe for animals in all of Central America.
Once the people of Belize killed the jaguars; now they protect them. People come from other countries to see the jaguars, and that brings money to belize.
Now Rabinowitz writes books and helps to run Panthera, an organization which works to save the big wild cats of the world. But he still works with animal as often as he can.
