Lesson SEN 23
Task: Roll a ball (basketball size).
Prerequisites: ADT 3
Concept: It is not necessary to actually pick up the ball to perform this task. For that reason, the only prerequisite is to hold an object in the hand (ADT 3) because this skill will be expanded to the rolling action. A game-like format is suggested for teaching this activity.
Behavioral Objective: While sitting on the floor with legs spread and having a ball placed within arm's reach, the student will roll the ball forward with enough force that it travels at least 10 feet to a 90% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: Various balls of approximately a basketball size.
Task Analysis:
1. Begin by prompting the student to sit in a manner where the legs are spread enough to allow for the ball to be placed between the legs. If for physical reasons this cannot be performed, the student could be encouraged to lie on his or her side.
2. Introduce the ball to the student and prompt the student to place his or her hand on top of the ball.
3. Physically guide the student to quickly move his or her hand forward when placed on the ball. Guide the student to perform this task until the ball travels forward.
4. Continue Step 3, reducing physical guidance until none is needed.
5. Introduce the concept of Step 4 in a manner where the ball is directed toward another student or the teacher. Continue with this process by using game-type activities.
