The Sun and the Moon
There once lived a woman in an isolated house set far in a valley. This woman had a son, and a daughter, Dal-soon. One day, as she was leaving to go to the town market, she said to her children ,”Hea-soon, Dal-soon, lock the door when I leave. A tiger may come down from the mountain, So don’t open the door until I come back.”
Tigers appeared frequently in that valley, and the mother was afraid that a tiger might eat her children. After she gave the children strict instructions, she went over the hill to town.
The two children waited for their mother to return. After it got dark, somerbody knocked on the door.
“Who is it?” asked Hea-Soon.
“Hea-Soon, Dal-Soon, it’s your mother. Open the door.”
“Is it you, Mother?”
Dal-Soon was so glad to hear her mother’s voice that she was about to unlock the door. Hea-Soon, however, did not think it really sounded like his mother’s voice. He stopped Dal-Soon from opening the door and said, “you say you are our mother, but your voice is different from our mother’s.”
Then the person outside replied, “What do you mean my voice is different? It is only because I am hoarse from shouting, ‘Buy mountain vegetables! Buy mountain vegetables!’ so loudly in the market.”
Dal-Soon asked, “If you are really our mother, let us see your eyes through this hole in the door.”
A big, red ere peered into the room through the hole. It was not their mother’s eye. A tiger, knowing that there were only children in the house, had come to eat them.
“Why are your eyes so red? Our mother has very beautiful eyes,” Hea-Soon asked.
Then the tiger outside the door said, “Children! My eyes turned red because of the ground red pepper I bought in the market.”
Then Dal-Soon said, “If you are really our mother, show us your hands.” The tiger put his paws inside the door. They were covered in yellow fur.
“Our mother’s hands are soft and white,” Dal-soon said. “Why are yours yellow like this?”
“It’s only because I worked in the gar den at my old home in town,” the tiger lied slyly.
The innocent children believed the tiger and opened the door. The tiger looked like their mother because he was wearing her clothes and had her towel tied around his head. He has eaten their mother in the mountains and taken her clothes.
“You waited a long time for me, and you look hungry, “ Said the tiger as he went into the kitchen. “ Wait a minute, and I’ll prepare your supper.” Having deceived the children, he was deciding which one to at first. The children, however, saw the tiger’s long tail sticking out from under its skirt when the beast was entering the kitchen.
“Heavens! It’s a tiger!” they cried
The two children crept stealthily out of the room, but they could not find a hiding place. Hea-Soon whispered to his sister, “We’ll be caught if we wait. Let’s climb up this tree.”The two children climbed up the big tree in the backyard and waited to see what would happen. When the tiger went back to get the children inside and outside the house.
“Children! Where are you? Supper is ready.” The tiger looked into the house, and he looked over the hedges. “That’s strange! Where could they have hidden themselves?” The tiger hunted for the children everywhere. Then, he looked into the well. In the well water, he could see the reflection of the two children sitting in the tree.
“Well, what are you doing up there? Come on down. Children?
“No, never!”
The children were trembling with fear. The tiger tried to climb up the tree, but he couldn’t because the tree was very slippery.
“Children, how did you climb up tree?”
“We used the sesame oil in the cupboard,” lied Hae-soon. The tiger believed Hae-Soon, and after he put oil on his paws, he tried again. This time he slipped and fell even more.
“children, I cannot climb up even with the help o the oil. Teach me how to climb. Your mother wants to go up there with you.
Dal-Soon could not stop laughing at the tiger, and she made a great mistake. Without realizing the danger, she told the tiger, “If I were you, I would use the ax in the kitchen.”
As soon as the tiger heard this, He got the ax and began to make notches in the tree so he could climb up easily. After making enough notches, the tiger began to climb the tree stop by step.
Now the children were sure to be caught by the tiger. The tiger’s paws were nearing the children. Trembling with fear, they prayed: “God. Oh, God! Please send athick rope to save us.”
Then, another rope came down from heaven. The tiger took hold of the rope without a second’s delay. However, the rope which the tiger grabbed had decayed and broke on the way to heaven. The tiger fell down to earth and was killed on the spot. The place where the tiger fell was a millet field. From that day on, millet stems have been dark red as if they were stained with blood.
The children who went up to heaven were taken care of by god. Hae-Soon became the sun, and dal-Soon became the moon. No they shine all over the world.
