Reliability and Validity of the Instruments
Walker and Hill-Polerecky33 reported a Cronbach ! of
.94 for the total HPLP II. The 3-week test-retest reliability
for the total HPLP II was r = 0.89. Adequate
Cronbach ! coefficients equal to .86 and internal consistency
and reliability were reported in a study of
Chinese patients with cerebral hemorrhage.34
In this study, the SPKQ and HPLP II were validated
by 5medical and nursing experts specializing in the care
and research of both hypertensive patients and stroke
patients. A content validity index was calculated to be
0.89 for SPKQ and 0.85 for HPLP II. We tested the
questionnaires in a pilot study with a sample of 20 patients
in China. Cronbach ! was used to calculate internal
consistency. The SPKQ and HPLP II had ! values
of .86 and .93, respectively.
