Huay Mongkol temple is in the moo baan (village) of Huay Mongkol which was previously known as Huay Khot. The area and inhabitants of Huay Khot village were poor and were visited by the King Rama IX in 1952. The King started a royal project to help the people of Huay Khot. Agricultural education for the mainly farming villagers and new roads to help the farmers get their produce to the local markets were made. The King also changed the name from Huay Khot to Huay Mongkol. The royal project also funded the building of a new temple, Wat Huay Mongol.
wat_huay_mongkol_2In 1964 the abbot of Wat Huay Mongkol collected the funds to make the temple building larger. In 1994 a new abbot had the idea of raising the status of Wat Huay Mongkol by a making statue of Luang Pu Thuat. That same year work began on making the giant monk statue. The statue of Luang Pu Thuat was completed in 2004. An opening ceremony attended by the Queen was held coinciding with the Queens 72nd birthday.
