How to make Potassium Nitrate with pH up You will need
Ammonium nitrate from cold Packs (NH4NO3) 250 mL beaker or jar and pH up that Specificly defines Potassium Hydroxide.Im going on instinct that this on instinct that this is 100% KOH. NOW add 100 mls of water to a beaker, this is to dissolve the Ammonium Nitrate hot water can be used but the endothermic reaction causes the tempreture to decrease rapidly. Now add 80 grams of NH4NO3 to the water. Now work out how much Hydroxide you will need for the reaction 56 grams is needed to react with the 80 of NH4NO3…i have a 250 ml bottle 56/100 x 250 mls =140 mls …. this is how much we will need for the reaction.Remember that KOH is caustic and safty precaustions must be taken at all times. Now add the hydroxide to the nitrate, what should happen is a vigorous reaction with alot of ammonia being released as you can see …… this does not happen, the 2 chemicals should react to from potassium Nitrate and Ammonium Hydroxide ( both soluble ) .What you can see here is a white precipitate forming. This shouldn’t happen, I started to think the KOH was badly un pure. At this point I was a bit confused to why this happened, I asked around on sciencemadness.org and they told me what to do
Remember even if doesnt look like it, some ammonia will still be released and this should be done out side
I didn’t record the boiling process, All that needs to be done if a precipitate forms is to dissolve the precipitate and boil down till a precipitate starts to form
At that point I took it off heat and placed it into a beaker, I then put it in the freezer for 30 min to cool to squeeze out most of the product
This is what mine looks like after a nice white precipitate formed as the temperature dropped , beaker up the clump and filter
Wash with cold water to rince the precipitate , vacuume filtration would work way better then gravity
To test, mix 50/50 or 75/25 KNO3 to sucrose and light… it should burn with a brilliant purple tinge
Special thanks to woelen and nein for the help they gave me to complete this experiment from sciencemadness
