gradient permanentmagneticseparation(HGPMS)device.Threeaerosolparticlesof
different magneticsusceptibility(NaCl,CuO,andFe3O4) weregeneratedintheelectrical
mobilitysizerangeof10–200nmandwereusedtostudyHGPMScollection.OneHGPMS
matrix element,madeofstainlesssteelwool,wasusedinthedeviceconfiguration.Three
flow rateswereselectedtosimulatetheenvironmentalwindspeedsofinteresttothe
study.MagneticforcewasfoundtoexhibitaninsignificanteffectontheseparationofNaCl
particles,evenintheHGPMSconfiguration.Diffusionwasamajormechanisminthe
removalofthediamagneticparticles;however,diffusionisinsignificantunderthe
influenceofahigh-gradientmagneticfieldforparamagneticorferromagneticparticles.
The HGPMSshowedhigh-performancecollection(499%)ofparamagneticCuOand
ferromagnetic Fe3O4 particlesforparticlesizesgreaterthanorequalto60nm.Asthewind
speedincreases,theinfluenceofthemagneticforceweakens,andthecapabilityto
removeparticlesfromthegasstreamdiminishes.TheresultssuggestthattheHGPMS
principlecouldbeexploredfordevelopmentofanadvancedminiaturizedpassiveaerosol
