Inclusion and exclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria included (1) ASRH outcomes; (2) an English- speaking Caribbean population; (3) a peer-reviewed, English lan- guage journal; (4) publication between January 1, 1998 and De- cember 31, 2009; (5) adolescents aged 10 –19 years (or mean age of sample is within this range); (6) clear description of sample selection, study design, and results; and (7) a sample size of 100 or more for quantitative studies, with allowance for smaller sizes only if the population used or outcome assessed was rare. If the age ranges of the samples were rather large (6 –18 years or
15– 45 years), thereby making the mean age outside of the afore- mentioned criteria, studies were included if they explicitly sep- arated the analyses for the adolescent age range. The same crite- ria were used for the inclusion of qualitative studies with the exception of criterion 7, as qualitative studies rarely have such large samples. The sample size requirements, used in similar reviews, were chosen to ensure that the studies reviewed had sufficient power for statistical analyses [22–24].
Studies were excluded if: (a) they did not provide original data such as editorial, letters to the editor (unless study brief reports), and review articles; (b) age could not be determined; or (c) they evaluated an instrument or technology
