Soil organic matter contents (SOM) were approximately 50–30%
higher in Homegardens than in Fields of the Flat and Moderate category,
respectively. The difference was insignificant in the Steep
category, and the values for Fields were the same in the Flat,
Moderate and Steep categories (Table 1). Interestingly, SOM was
significantly reduced by more than 10 tonnes ha−1 from Flat to
Moderate, and Moderate to Steep category in Homegardens. For
total soil nitrogen (TN) the rank orders were similar but respective
differences between Homegardens and Fields as well as along the
inclination gradient were much smaller.
