Fig. 1 shows that all tested dilutions of the two strains grew at
temperatures of 30, 37 and 42 C, though only K. marxianus UFV-3
was able to grow at 45 C. The thermotolerance of the species K.
marxianus is well documented, while it is rare in S. cerevisiae with
few strains described (Sree et al., 2000). Thermotolerant K. marxanus strains isolated by Banat et al. (1992) were tested for the abiity to convert biomass into ethanol in the SSF process.
