Why Writing is Important
Writing for a College Student
The typical college student will be required to write a variety of essays throughout his/her collegiate career. These essay assignments will cover a variety of goals and purposes. Most of the time, a student will be required to work on an essay assignment as homework. Some of these assignments can be written using only personal experiences or previously gained knowledge, while other essays will require additional research and the use of outside sources. Sometimes, a student will be asked to write an essay in class with a limited amount of time. Regardless of the actual assignment and the format used, understanding what makes for good writing and the proper techniques to use can lead to creating a well-crafted essay in a shorter amount of time.
Writing After Aims
Many Aims students pursue other educational opportunities after acquiring a degree from Aims. Some students transfer to a four year university to pursue a bachelor’s degree. For these students, a personal essay is often required as part of the application process. Colleges want to see that an applicant can write well and use language and grammar appropriately. Furthermore, a writing sample, such as an essay completed for a class, may be required as part of the process. This is almost always the case for students who pursue graduate studies, and graduate work usually requires the completion of several comprehensive essays. Additionally, scholarships are often rewarded based upon the writing ability of applicants. For these reasons, any student who wants to further his/her career in academia needs to know how to write well.
Writing in the Workplace
Not only is writing an important academic skill, but it is also an important skill that translates into any career field. Nearly all professions require some form of writing on the job. For example, doctors and nurses write medical reports on patients; accountants and business managers create financial reports; engineers and software technicians write instructional sheets and user manuals; nearly every worker in all business fields composes emails and other forms of written communication for customers, clients, and co-workers. Ultimately, the number of job tasks that require writing is countless. Since writing is used in all fields and jobs, it is a skill that all students and workers should learn and become better at.
