1. Introduction
Softwood forestation is a major economic activity in many
developing countries. In the southern hemisphere, exotic pine
trees are commonly planted because of their rapid growth rates
and an established culturing knowledge (FAO, 2001). In regions
like Patagonia, a vast steppe area located in southern South
America, forestry with pines is strongly promoted, because of
the area’s high potential in terms of soil, water and, probably
more importantly, available surface area (Colmet Daage et al.,
1995; Schlichter and Laclau, 1998; SAGPyA, 2001).
