Ms.C. Primary care provider (PCP) was notified of her hospitalization. As part of her follow-up care,she underwent a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan,which reveealed a T score of-2.6. Ms.C was diagnosed with osteoporosis and started on an oral bisphosphonate.An occupational therapy consult was obtained so that a customized volar splint could be fabricated after the adema in her hand and wrist resolved.
Splints are usually applied to reduce movemant and provide comfortable support while an injury, often to a bone or bones,is stabilized or surgery. Splints are often preferred to casts in the ED setting because edema may continue. Patients with splint should for an evaluation within 2 to 7days.
