and the
vundu (Heterobranchus longiflis orHeterobranchus bisorsalis)
(Salami, Fagbenro & Sydenham1993; Nwadukwe
1995) and crosses of the gilthead seabream(Sparus auratus)
with red seabream (Pagrus major) (Hulata1995).
Increased growth rate in inter-specific hybrids may result
from dominance variance (Tave 1986) or from increasing
the number of polymorphic loci in an
individual (Bartley et al.1997).
The inter-specific cross of Black Sea trout and rainbow
trout exhibited superior growth rates to that of
parental species. However, both triploid and control
hybrid groups demonstrated lower survival rate in
incubation, early fry stage and fingerling stage when
compared with pure breed parental species. Further
research should be conducted on developmental and
physiological traits of hybrids in the later life stage.
