Some years ago I lived in a remote village in northern Thailand with a group of hill tribe people. Almost all of them were farmers. They had little money, so they fed their families with food that they grew themselves. Everyone in the family worked on the farm. Even small children did simple tasks. The children learned how to farm from their parents. When it was time to plant the rice seeds, the parents taught the children how to do it. They poked a stick into the dirt. When they took the stick out of the dirt, a small hole was left. Then they took three or four rice seeds and dropped them into the small hole. They were very careful with the seeds. They never put more than four seeds into a hole. They didn’t want to waste any seeds.
