Oviposition
Ovipositing females of D. ancilla sit low in the vegetation and drop their eggs to the ground, without attaching them to any substrate (P-E Betzholtz, unpublished manuscript). Females of some other species with polyphagous grazing larvae
oviposit near but not on the preferred food plant (Thompson 1988, Bergman 1999). Therefore, I consider every oviposition as a choice of food plant or a choice of microclimatic condition.
