Preparation of handsheets and evaluation
of paper properties
Using the standard procedure (TAPPI test method no. T 236
cm-85), the Kappa number of enzyme-treated and control pulps
was determined without alkaline extraction and after alkaline (3%
NaOH) extraction at 60°C for 1 h. For each determination, three
replicates were used. Seven standard handsheets were prepared
from pulps subjected to each treatment and air dried as per TAPPI
(Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industries, 1986) recommendations.
The brightness, long span, zero span, and burst
indexes were determined as described previously7 and all data
represented in appropriate units as per TAPPI recommendations.
