I’m feeling positive after today’s exercise as it has reinforced confidence in my work, that
I am containing difficulties for clients and that I am in the struggle with them . . . I also
feel validated that what I am doing is helpful and is a journey, though long and arduous.
While mostly positive experiences for these clinical psychologists, engaging in
experiential exercises also brought up anxiety at times about being observed and
possibly found wanting. Carol’s journal in particular showed the centrality of her
concern about exposure to judgement, the double-sided nature of her experience
being clear in her reflection after one exercise, ‘I felt both horrified at the idea of
being observed . . . and also very keen/anxious/excited to hear the feedback’.
Although often feeling insecure and at times ‘wary’ about the role play exercises,
Carol also described these as the ‘best part’ of the training days in terms of her
learning, commenting at the end of the last training day, ‘I enjoyed the role plays in
the end and feel it helped my thinking and feeling of stuckness around my client . . . I
feel I’ve learned a lot today’.
