If I ask, are you going to tell me?’
‘Probably not,’ she answered weakly. She didn’t know if she could talk about it yet. Her heart still hurt. She could barely think back to what happened without breaking down, how much more if she had to say the words out loud. She didn’t want to admit it, but having Geun Suk there made her feel slightly better. If there was anyone who could understand her, it would be him. He never forced her to tell him anything; he always waited until she was ready to talk.
Geun Suk nodded and leaned forward. ‘Then I won’t ask. But will you at least tell me that you’re going to be okay?’
Shin Hye looked up at him and shook her head faintly. ‘I can’t. I don’t know yet.’ Another tear trickled down her cheek.
Geun Suk stood up and stooped in front of her. Shin Hye recoiled, but he took her hand and stroke it. ‘Whatever it is, it’s probably going to hurt for a while. But trust me, you’re going to be okay.’
Min Ho tanked the interview that afternoon. He was out of it the entire time and gave mechanical answers that didn’t make any sense at all. His manager was able to instruct the interviewer not to mention Park Shin Hye’s name at any point in the interview to prevent risky responses from Min Ho. But that didn’t stop him. The older man finally pulled Min Ho away after he answered the interviewer who asked if there was anything he learned from Kim Tan when it comes to love.
Min Ho looked straight into the man’s eyes and frowned. ‘I learned that Lee Min Ho is trapped as much as Kim Tan was. Except in the drama, people were rooting for him to end up with the girl. But in real life, people will judge Lee Min Ho for choosing to be happy.’
His manager swooped in before he could say anything else. He apologized profusely to the interviewer and asked him if they could reschedule and re-do the interview since Min Ho wasn’t feeling well. With a few more coaxing, he was able to make the reporter promise not to include anything from what they’ve talked about that afternoon.
As soon as Min Ho got home, he called Shin Hye several times but she wouldn’t pick up; he tried messaging her but he didn’t know what to say. Anything he said now would be pointless. But still, he wanted to know where she was and if she was alright. It’s been a couple of hours since the meeting and he hasn’t heard anything from Shin Hye or her manager since they left the building.
‘She’s okay,’ his manager told him. ‘I just got off the phone with Joon. She’s fine. You can stop worrying.’
Min Ho let out a sigh of relief and collapsed on the couch. Thank God she’s okay.
‘What exactly happened there? You were very unprofessional. You’re lucky that the reporter who interviewed you has always been a good friend of the agency. Don’t let this happen again.’
He ignored the man and covered his eyes with his arm. Shin Hye’s voice kept playing in his head. He may not have seen her face when she said goodbye, but the way she said it was soul-crushing. He knew he deserved it, but it still hurt like hell. He sat there numbly before feeling the impulse to rush and follow her to the elevator. But by then, it was too late.
‘That fight with Shin Hye. Was it serious? Joon sounded angry.’
‘I’m not really in the mood to talk about it, hyung,’ he said lazily and turned to lie on his stomach. Joon hyung is angry. Is she still crying? Is she really okay? ‘I’m exhausted.’
‘Arasso. What you need right now is rest so you better stay here. No trips to Shin Hye’s apartment, okay?’ His manager put the rest of his stuff in his room and gave Min Ho some instructions. ‘There’s food in the fridge if you want to eat dinner. I left a few scripts and contracts in your room so just browse through them. President Jang will be contacting you regarding your thoughts. He thinks picking up a few more CFs wouldn’t hurt since most of the next few weeks will just consist of training for your movie anyway. Which reminds me, you have two days off but we’re meeting your personal trainer tomorrow afternoon. We have to finalize your schedule before you leave for New Zealand.’
His manager was about to go out the door when he hit his forehead with his palm. ‘Oh right, I almost forgot. President Kim told me Shin Hye left this on the table at the agency. It looks like it’s for you.’
Min Ho’s ears perked up and he opened his eyes in time to see his manager put a square white envelope on the table. He waited until the older man left before he rose to pick it up.
His heart raced as he opened it, momentarily forgetting what had happened between him and Shin Hye. There were several photographs inside, taken with an instant camera. There was a solo shot of Shin Hye taken overlooking the beach. She looked happy and radiant. He figured this was before all those articles came out. (Caption: I wish you were here.) There was one of her and her family – their faces huddled together in one side and her brother’s arm occupying almost half of the photo. (Caption: Oppa is really bad at taking selcas. But look at Appa’s wacky pose. Kekeke.) Another photo showed a sand drawing that says: Park Shin Hye loves Lee Min Ho enclosed in a heart, with Shin Hye’s face at the lower left, looking embarrassed. (Caption: I wrote this as fast as I could and erased it as soon as I took a photo. You’re my only witness. <3) There were other pictures Shin Hye took of the food she ate, of the sights she saw – all with handwritten captions. His heart lurched at the thought that she took all those photos just for him, all to make him feel like he was actually there with her. The last one was a photo of a sunset. (Caption: This sunset reminds me of you. It took my breath away, like you do every time I see you. Let’s go together next time, oppa.) Min Ho bit his lip, trying to stop himself from tearing up.
He noticed there was a card inside the envelope, too. Min Ho’s fingers were trembling when he opened it and read.
Oppa, I know you’re mad at me. I’m the worst girlfriend ever and I wouldn’t forgive myself if I were you. But I hope you would. Because from now on, I promise to answer all your calls and texts. I promise not to turn off my phone even if I get into a fight with Joon oppa. I promise to only look at you and ignore all the other handsome guys in the world. Because they’re all ugly anyway compared to you. Hehehe. Is that too cheesy? I’m not lying though. You’re the only one for me, Lee Min Ho. Things are going to get tougher from now on, right? Let’s brave the world together. I love you.
