2 still missing in Phuket speedboat collision
Post Today is reporting that two South Korean tourists are still missing from a collision between a speedboat and a fishing boat near Phuket.
The speedboat was returning late yesterday afternoon from Koh Phi Phi and was carrying 37 tourists from seven countries, most Chinese. In addition there were three crew and two guides, the Phuket Wan reported.
There were several injuries, some serious.
Post Today says marine police have dispatched a search boat, but rescue efforts are being complicated by sea currents.
Post Today quotes speedboat helmsman Surat Marot O-sot as saying that the accident occurred after he bent down to pick up a engine covering that had fallen to the floor of the boat. He said winds were normal and the light rain that was falling was not a factor.
Mr Surat may now face charges of recklessness. Phuket Wan quotes one tourist as saying that none of the passengers were wearing life vests at the time of the collision.
