The Port of Auckland wants to erect a memorial to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Rainbow Warrior bombing.
The ship belonged to Greenpeace and was active in supporting a number of whaling, seal hunting, nuclear testing and nuclear waste dumping campaigns during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The Rainbow warrior was sunk whilst in Auckland harbour in New Zealand by spies from the French intelligence service (DGSE) on 10 July 1985, killing photographer Fernando Pereira.
