The call to integrate leadership and management
content across a nursing curriculum has been well
argued, and suggests an increasing realization that a
collaborative approach between the education and
health sectors is essential to the facilitation of effective
management and leadership education for nurses (Jones
& Sackett 2009). One of the reasons why nursing
leadership and management education is so important

leadership to the nursing work environment – an
important factor in staff satisfaction and retention, and
patient outcomes (American Association of Critical-
Care Nurses 2005, Duffield et al. 2009, 2011). Positive

they must be created and fostered by strong nurse
leaders (Upenieks 2003). Evidence has shown that good
nursing leadership at the ward level is an important
predictor of staff nurse satisfaction with nursing, job
