The dimensions of this theme are exemplified in two studies
and their titles. One is Magarey and McCutcheon (2005)
study: ‘Fishing with the dead — Recall of memories from
the ICU’. The title was derived from one informants dream
or hallucination that he had been fishing with his father who
had died 10 years earlier. In Parker’s study (1999), entitled
‘On confronting Life and Death’, recollections of the informants
include experiences of severe dyspnoea and other
aspects of the life-threatening nature of critical illness.
