The Devil and Tom Walker
The Devil and Tom Walker is one of Washington Irving writing in the age of romance. During this time politics, economics and society were changing so it reflects the dark side in humanity.
Firstly, the character of the devil is devious, meaning he can lure somebody by tempting them. It lures Tom Walker by offering valuable things but the deal is Tom Walker has to give his soul to the Devil.
Secondly, greed is the dark side of human nature so when people live in the poverty, it can make them do whatever to get better life. Tom decided to make a deal with the devil without thinking that means he does not care what could happen in the future. He is a greedy man because the one he cares about is himself.
Thirdly, selfishness and fear of sin in Christ are in people’s minds. The writer reflects that through Tom Walker. When people have no money to give back to Tom, he always seizes property in people’s house and it makes people get in trouble. After that Tom tries to find out something to believe in, he starts reading Bible.
Lastly, the writer reflects these morals through Tom Walker to show how greed, selfishness and impurity of mind in humans are a sin against god. Humans are both good and bad. Although it depends on the person and what they think and do. People can be good or bad at the same time.
