The Lantern Festival which is celebrated in Korea has some similarities with the Songkran Festival, which celebrated in my home country of Thailand. Although these festivals are similar, the are different in some ways.
Both festivals take place in April. In the Korean Lantern Festival people wear bright traditional cloths. At Songkran, which celebrated the Thai new year, people also wear bright clothes, although these are not necessarily traditional. In both festivals people listen to cheerful music. During both festivals you can hear very loud music wherever you go.
April in Korea can be quite cool, so people might need to dress up in warm clothes.
However, in Thailand it is the hottest month of the year, so people wear very light clothes. An important part of Songkran is throwing water at people, while fire is a big part of Korea festival, as the lanterns to be lit. The origins of these festivals are also different. Songkran celebrated the end of the harvest, while the Korean Lantern Festival celebrated a Buddhist holiday.
Although the Korean Lantern Festival and Songkran are celebrated in different ways, in different countries, both festivals share some similarities.
