The VP test, or Voges Proskauer test, determines the ability of a microorganism to cary out Butanediol fermentation. It uses Alpha-naphthol and KOH as well as vortexing to determine if there is any acetoin intermediate in pathway. If there is, the given sample will turn a red/copper color. If there isn't, there will be no color change. Bacillus megaterium is an aerobic organism that equires no additional organic molecules, so it should test negative in the VP test, experiencing no color change.
