When our friend from Guatemala asked us to be the padrinos for her wedding, we didn’t really know what she was asking.
We later learned that this was a sacred Latino tradition. The padrinos are like godparents for your marriage. They are an older couple whom the engaged couple looks up to.
At the wedding, the padrinos walk down the aisle as part of the processional and they pray over the couple in the wedding ceremony as soon as they are pronounced husband and wife.
The Padrinos commit to support and guide the couple throughout their marriage, both in prayer and action.
We did not have official padrinos at our wedding, though we did have several couples that we looked up to as examples. These role models and mentors have been crucial to our marriage survival.
