There is a burgeoning interest in alerting primary care physicians to the potential for common mental disorders, including anxiety, depression, somatization, and substance abuse, because these conditions generally include multiple physical symptoms that compel patients to seek primary medical care more frequently than they seek mental health services. It seems reasonable to suggest that dentists, most of whom are in effect also primary care providers, might also incorporate similar minimal screening approaches for their patients with chronic TMD pain (as well as their non-TMD patients). Toward this end, a brief, valid, self-administered screening questionnaire has been developed that is equally suited to the interest of dentists and physicians. The Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders Patient Health Questionnaire (PRIME-MD PHQ, typically referred to simply as PRIME-MD) screens for eight common mental disorders (major depressive disorders, panic disorders, other anxiety disorders, bulimia nervosa, other depressive disorders, probable alcohol abuse or dependence, and somatoform and binge-eating disorders). Research shows good agreement between PHQ diagnoses and those of mental health professionals.>' The average time to review a patient's completed PHQ is less than 3 minutes.
