Symptoms generally consist of chlorotic tissue extending across the leaf on both sides of the midrib. The colour varies from yellow-green to white, and in some cultivars a pinkish tinge may develop. The areas range from narrow stripes on each margin of the leaf to bands 50 to 100 mm broad(Fig. 43). The chlorotic bands are positioned near the base of the older leaves and progressively closer to the tips of the successively younger leavese yecurred in the spindle before the affected leaves unrolled. Injury is usually eaused by stemperatures and the presence of free water in the spindle
On some sensitive cultivars. Banded chlorosis may also be caused by heat, particularly where the leaf bends naturally. Although the symptoms of Banded chlorosis due to low temperatures are spectacular, economic losses are usually small.
