On the other hand, a correlation between maximum COL (either centroid1 or centroid2) at which the double Gaussian
function has its maxima and the sum of sunspot area can be found, when the data point corresponding to the solar cycle
19 is omitted. Distributions of COL due to sunspots appearing in only one of two hemispheres is found to have no correlation. It is inferred that the level of the solar magnetic activity is correlated with the ’median’ latitude of sunspots.
This implies that sunspots of a more active cycle tend to emerge at higher latitudes on the whole. We note that Li
et al. (2002) have drawn a similar conclusion reporting a correlation between maximum latitude at which first sunspot
groups of a new cycle appear and the maximum solar activity of the cycle.
