Adverse side-effects after ivermectin treatment of
streptocerciasis were similar to those observed in
onchocerciasis (WHO 1995), most commonly pruritus
and papular dermatitis, as seen in streptocerciasis
after DEC treatment by Duke (1957) and Meyers
et al. (1972; 1978). The absence of complaints for
severe systemic reactions may have been due to the
low mf densities of the examined persons. Since
severe postural hypotension occurs only rarely after
ivermectin treatment of onchocerciasis, larger numbers
of patients with streptocerciasis have to be
observed after therapy. However, we suppose that
patients with co-existing streptocerciasis need not be
excluded from treatment during the planned extension
of ivermectin mass treatment for onchocerciasis
(Remme 1995).
