ABSTRACTThis article attempts to examine the position of Filipino domestic workers in Brunei. While Filipinos are engaged in a range of services and skilled occupations, people from the Philippines tend to predominate in the sector of domestic work. The study of migrant workers from the Philippines will be done at two levels. In the first instance, an overview of the Filipino population in Brunei is discussed. At the second level, the results of a detailed survey carried out among a sample of 216 domestic workers from the Philippines is analyzed. These two levels of analysis is used to predict the future trends for Filipinos in Brunei. Demographic information from census data on foreign-born persons provide an indication of the rapid growth of Filipinos in Brunei. In government reports, the foreign-born are classified by residential status, such as "Brunei citizens," "permanent residents" and "temporary residents and others." The migration of Filipino labor to Brunei may not be a recent phenomenon. However, the migration of large numbers of Filipinos to Brunei and their visibility in Bruneian society became significant only after 1981.
