In each container, a line was scored with
a needle to produce a furrow in the substrate, approximately
2 cm long and 1 mm deep. This was to encourage springtails
to lay their eggs in the furrow rather than underneath the
glass coverslip. After females had laid their "rst batch of
eggs they were removed to new test containers with the
same conditions, and observations continued. Parameters
tested were the number of eggs in the "rst and second batch
and total number of eggs, time taken for eggs to hatch,
number of juveniles successfully hatching from "rst batch,
and total number of juveniles.
