As a covenant or binding contract, marriage involved certain responsibilities on the side of both parties. John Stott,44 quoting Roger Beckwith, suggests that implicit in the marriage covenant would be the following:
(1) marital love (including sexual privileges),
(2) living together as a single household (Gen 2:24),
(3) faithfulness to the marriage bed (Exod 20:14),
(4) provision for the wife by the husband (Gen 30:30) and
(5) obedience to the husband by the wife (3:16).
