Another A-ring (10) is fitted flat side first to be back-to-back with the first A-ring and the external conical surface is visible when looking into the bore. The metal wedge ring (13) is next, with the internal conical face inwards against the mating face of the A-ring. Lastly the cuff mitre ring (12) fitted with the thin lip facing outwards, which fits into the gland ring when fitted. When refitting the gland ring (3) it is permissible to ease the o/d of the spigot with emery cloth so that it re-enters the bore more easily. Place the high pressure barrel
assembly on a vertical axis with the gland assembly uppermost, and enter
the ram through the gland ring and use a soft hammer to gently tap the
spigot end of the ram in order to penetrate the high pressure seals which may offer fairly stiff resistance.
Replacing the end plug seal is simply a matter of fitting a new O-ring (15).
Unscrewing retainer ring (8) will gain access to the seals. Mitre ring (7) will not require replacing unless for some reason it has become damaged.
1.3.1. REPLACING DRIVE END SEALS
The seals on the low-pressure side of the intensifier may be changed straightforwardly with reference to the assembly drawing. Unscrew drive end plug. Replace backup ring then O-ring. To replace drive piston seals, the piston must be withdrawn from the drive barrel using a length of M6 studding into the back of the piston. Care must be taken not to score or scratch the
bore of the drive barrel. Fit new seals and carefully re-insert piston. Refit drive end plug and tighten.
The spigot of the ram will self locate to the hydraulic drive piston, either during the assembly, or upon first application of pressure: it is NOT necessary to apply leverage to tighten the threads at either end of the high pressure drive barrel; manual torque applied to the high pressure end cap using a 12 mm dia bar, not more than 150 mm long, is all that is required to ensure that end butting conditions have been achieved - excessive torque applied will serve no purpose as the seals are self energising and would only result in creating unnecessary difficulties on a future occasion when dismantling.
1.3.2. DRIVE END (QEV) - QUICK EXHAUST VALVE SEALS
Unscrew inlet adaptor complete with bonded washer. Withdraw shuttle body assembly, ensuring lapped sealing area on opposite end is kept free of dents or scratches. Replace backup ring then O-ring onto shuttle O/D recess. Refit shuttle into end cap. Replace bonded washer, refit inlet adaptor and tighten.
