In this study, we focus on a technical strategy of privacy regulation: having set a Facebook profile to friends-only. An individual with a friends-only profile only allows their content to be viewed by established social network site contacts. This privacy-enhancing phenomenon has become popular in recent years [19,32]. We collected privacy behavior data at two levels: First, we asked participants if they used any Facebook privacy settings, and second, we assessed if the profile was friends-only. 83.2% of respondents indicated using any Facebook privacy settings, and 58.29% of respondents indicated they had made their Facebook profile friends-only. These measures were positively and significantly correlated (r=.4526), indicating a relationship between setting the profile friends-only and engaging in privacy-enhancing behaviors. The dependent measure in this study is having a friends-only profile.
