Boarding House plot
Plot
The plot of this story starts out with a brief introduction of Mrs. Mooney, one of the protagonists in the story. Mrs. Mooney was forced into opening a boarding house to make a living, after she had divorced herself from her husband, who had been a violent alcoholic. Helping Mrs. Mooney in her boarding house is her 19-year old daughter, Polly. Overall, business for Mrs. Mooney’s boarding house is quite good as its location in Dublin, combined with its affordable rates, has attracted many different sorts of clients, such as clerks and musicians. Polly, who used to work in an office as a clerk, was forced by her mother to help out around the boarding house following the repeated advances attempted on her by a perverted sheriff’s man.
In Polly’s line of work in cleaning and providing entertainment to the guests of the boarding house, Polly embarks on an intimate relationship with one of the boarding house’s many male clients, Mr. Doran. Mrs. Mooney eventually knew about the relationship, but instead of immediately intervening to stop or give it her blessing, she monitors the progress being made by Mr. Doran and Polly as a couple…waiting for “the right moment” to do so. She finally makes arrangements to speak with Mr. Doran on a Sunday morning.
Mrs. Mooney looks forward to her talk with Mr. Doran, as she hopes to successfully convince Mr. Doran to marry Polly. Mrs. Mooney views this marriage as a great opportunity for Polly, as Mr. Doran had worked for a wine merchant for thirteen years and gained a lot of respect and charisma via this career. On the other hand however, Mr. Doran is extremely worried about meeting with Mrs. Mooney due to the fact that his love for Polly had put him into a dilemma, in which he was forced to make the choice of either marrying Polly…and risk the destruction of his good reputation, or to run away, and to leave this unpleasant business in the dust. In his tension of waiting to meet Mrs. Mooney, Polly enters the room and pledges to end her life following the devastating grief of Mr. Doran’s potential rejection of her. Though this causes Mr. Doran to realize her beauty and kindness, he still is quite unsure about his overall decision.
Eventually, Mr. Doran departs for the meeting, leaving Polly to wait for the outcome in her tension and anguish. Polly begins to contemplate about her potential future with Mr. Doran as her husband, when finally, Mrs. Mooney emerges from the meeting, telling Polly that Mr. Doran would like to talk privately with her. Thought the story ends here, it is quite likely that this gesture on Mr. Doran’s part is the offering of his hand to her in marriage.
