Introduction
The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the use of bar model strategy to enhance students’ understanding in mathematics and develop their representation in mathematics. It is the fact that
mathematics is usually perceived as a boring subject. This is because it deals a lot with notation and
abstract concepts. We, mathematics educators could not deny that there are quite a number of students who have problems in learning mathematics. They did not understand mathematics and did not like
mathematics. The teachers wonder how they should teach those students in their classes who always seem to struggle to understand the mathematics lesson. They have pondered over questions like: What exactly don’t the students understand, and why? What do they understand- and in what sense do they understand? What do I need to do to assist more students to understand?
