Above is a painting depicting a snapshot of the beautiful Atlanta and Hippomenes during their famous race. Atalanta, dressed in beautiful clothes, is grabbing a golden apple while Hippomenes attempts to beat her to the finish line. This painting was created by Willem van Herp using oil on canvas. Willem Van Herp took this old mythological story and combined it with the culture of his own time, 1632 in France. This combination of cultures appears clear through the apparel and surroundings in the painting. Besides all of the people being dressed in heavy dresses and silk, there is also a dog in the bottom right corner. Neither of these would have appeared in ancient Roman times. He titled it Atlanta and Hippomenes.
