This paper analyzed the practicality of using PSB to treat synthetic
white spirit wastewater and recover biomass. We inspected
crucial factors to determine their effects on the process and
managed to improve the degradation effectiveness. In general, the
treatment of white spirit wastewater by PSB was promising. A high
COD load of 9100e25,600 mg l1 and an ethanol concentration of
0.5e2.0% did not inhibit the function of PSB in white spirit wastewater.
The tolerance to pH was effective as low as 5.0 and the final
pH tended to be slightly alkaline. Under the diluting (reflux) condition,
the COD was removed by 76.02% and the biomass production
reached 400 mg l1.
