Merit making for the end of the lent:
It is known in Thai as “Ok Phansa”. This takes place at the end of the rainy season on the full moon of the 11th lunar (usually falling in October). There is a special ceremony for the occasion that offers food alms to monks called “Tak Bat Thewo”, and some older people listen to special sermons at the temple. Once the Lord Buddha retreated to heaven to preach a sermon to his mother who had gon there after death. On the last day of the retreat he came down to earth, people offered food to him and his disciples. To celebrate this event in some places the people bring the image down from the hill to imitate Lord Buddha’s coming down from heaven. The monks follow the image as his disciples and the people wait in line to offer food to them for making merit. This kind of merit – making is called “Theworohana” which means “the coming down from heaven.” But popularly known as “Tak bat thewo.
