The European Agency for Safety and
Health at Work commissioned this Status
Report on stress at work within the framework
of the Topic Centre on Research –
Work and Health (TC/WH). The Report
considers early and contemporary scientific
studies on the nature of stress at work,
on its effects on health and on the way in
which such knowledge is being applied in
attempts to manage this problem. The
Topic Centre on Good Practice – Stress at
Work (TC/GP-ST) collects and evaluates
good practice information on stress at
work both within the EU and beyond.
Consequently, this Report deals with the
research evidence regarding the assessment
and management of stress at work:
it does not review stress management in
practice. However, it discusses the conceptual
frameworks implied in the practice of
stress management at work and in current
health and safety legislation, focusing in
particular on the utility of the ‘control cycle’
and problem-solving approaches to
the management of stress at work.
