While the Indian treatises advised the simple use of might as the best way to extort resources and weaken vassals, the Javanese Kings were forced to use more subtle and pacific ways of neutralising turbulent and potentially dangerous vassals - a ritual policy, which as well as weakening their rivals, was an effective means of consolidating and legitimating their power.
