In this paper, we demonstrated that a bio-based and biodegradable
starch-based port-hole spacer used to protect washing
machines during transport and storage shows potential improvements
in several life cycle impact categories in spite of the higher
density of the foam. This study was based on some reasonable assumptions.
The organic recycling rate for starch-based prototype
packaging was set at 40%, i.e. the rate of collection of bio-waste
found in the countries where the washing machines are potentially
sold (see 2.3).
