William Shakespeare was was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. He wrote 37 plays and over 150 poems. Some of his most well-known plays are Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet. Many people think that he is the greatest writer who has ever lived.
Shakespeare did not start out as a writer. He began his career as an actor. We do not know exactly when he started writing plays instead of just acting in them. But we do know that by the time Shakespeare died in 1616, he had already become very famous. People all over England were reading his poems and going to see his plays.
Today, theaters all over the world put on Shakespeare’s plays. There have also been over 500 movies made based on his plays. This means that you can see the work of William Shakespeare without ever leaving your own couch!
