This was one of my first drip paintings, and it conveyed for me the sense that whilst the ‘designed’ image was very evident and strong, the openness of the shapes allowed for a free interpretation – I found myself discovering new images and meanings in the painting long after it was complete. However, this exact technique was proving too hard to control to use as a means of conveying an architectural concept. I needed to develop it further.
At the same time as we were developing our abstract definitions of ‘hybrid’, we were also doing more technical analyses of existing architectures we considered ‘hybrid’ to help draw out formal characteristics of hybridity. I chose three precedents to study: Covent Garden in London, Federation Square in Melbourne, and Parc de la Villette in Paris.
